This antique Victorian era black voided velvet polonaise bustle dress dates from the 1880s. It is made of a woven cotton brownish black fabric background, with a black silk cut voided velvet floral pattern design. There is a black silk satin fabric, chantilly lace covered panel insert on the front bodice. This beautiful polonaise long fitted bodice dress jacket has a layered draping bustle back full floor length skirt with cutaway open front and would have been worn over an underskirt or petticoat. There is a high neck velvet trim collar, long tapered sleeves with chantilly lace velvet bow trim cuffs and 15 black jet faceted glass buttons for closure down the front. It is unlined, with the frayed lining having been removed from inside. The polonaise measures 56 inches long, with a 30 inch waist, 36 inch bust, 13 inch back and 22 inch long sleeves. It is in good wearable condition, with only some slight wear and fraying on the fabric shoulders.
