This Victorian era black silk and straw plate hat dates from 1890. It is made of a large round wired frame with gathered sheer black silk chiffon ruffles covering the brim, and a small tightly woven black straw crown on the back. The hat is trimmed with blue and black silk ribbon bows, black feathers, and tiny blue forget-me-not flowers. Someone has added an elastic strap tie for securing under the chin. This flat round shaped plate style hat has a small crown on the back which is fully lined and would have been secured to the back of a Gibson Girl style hairdo with a hat pin. The hat measures 42 inches in circumference, with a 16 inch circumference inner crown. It is in good wearable condition with only some slight wear, and fraying to the silk ribbon trim.
