Embroidered Goldhaube Headdress Bonnet. |


| This
rare antique gold embroidered Goldhaube headdress bonnet dates from
1820. It is made of a rigid rag cardboard base with an ecru silk
fabric covering, encrusted over with gold bullion metal embroidery
and sequins. The metallic threads are hand stitched in a raised
padded stitch embroidery couching work floral design. There is black,
white and gold lace trim edging around the face, and silk brocade
ribbon trim draping down the back. The inside is lined in linen
with remnants of silk fabric on the back crown. There is a linen
strap with hook and eye closure for securing under the chin. This
early European Goldhaube or Bodenhaube headdress cap bonnet was
the traditional headdress worn by the women of West Germany, Westfalen,
the Emsland region from 1755 through about 1850. These caps took
200-300 working hours to create, at the price of several monthly
wages. The gold caps were worn primarily by married women. This
beautiful bonnet measures 15 inches around the face, with 21 inch
long ribbons hanging down the back. It is in good wearable condition
with only some minor wear. This is truly a rare early find. $300 |
