This Victorian era boy's embroidered velvet ear flap cap dates from the 1860s. It is made of a dark plum purple velvet, with colorful silk embroidery work. There is a burgundy red silk fringed rope tassel hanging down the side. The cap has attached velvet ear flaps for warmth and is fully lined in a blue cotton fabric. These rare early ethnic style "smoking caps" were all the rage with the style conscious Victorian gentleman and were copied for children young boy's too. The cap measures 18 inches inside circumference. It is in excellent wearable condition and is a rare early find.
