Antique
Chinese Silk Appliqué Tiger Baby Hat. |

| This
antique Chinese silk appliqué tiger baby hat dates from the
Qing Dynasty. It is all hand stitched with embroidered appliqués.
This unusual shaped hand crafted hat is made of black silk with
embroidered appliqués creating the face of a tiger on the
front, with ear flaps and flowers decorating the sides. There is
gold silk brocade fabric draping down the back with decorative black
stitching. The hat is fully lined in blue silk. These hats often
denote luck and peace if worn by an infant on holidays or birthdays
and were sometimes thought to protect and ward off an early death.
The hat measures 10 inches long, 5 1/2 inches wide and 11 inches
around the face opening. It is in good condition with only minor
wear. There are a few missing white whisker stitches and eyelashes
gone from one eye and a couple of faint age spots on the back. This
is truly a beautiful piece of antique Chinese textile art and would
make for a wonderful display piece. $100 |
