Antique
Ralli Sindh India Pakistan Quilt. |

| This
antique ralli Sindh India Pakistan quilt dates from the 1970s. It
is all hand stitched and pieced with bright colorful cotton and
silk satin fabrics with many tiny stitches. There is a diamond and
square grid design with contrasting hand embroidered circles inside
reminiscent of the popular American "Diamond in the Square"
quilt pattern. This marvelous multi-pieced patchwork block pattern
ralli quilt has tiny stitches about 1/8 to 1/4 inch apart. Ralli
Quilts are remarkable, very traditional quilts made by women in
the areas of Sindh, Pakistan, western India, and in surrounding
areas. In the villages, ralli quilts are an important part of a
girl's dowry. Owning many ralli quilts is a measure of wealth. The
word "Ralli" is derived from the local word ralanna meaning
to mix or connect. This light weight quilt has been beautifully
hand made with a colorful machine sewn sawtooth border and hand
quilted blue back. It measures 88 by 60 inches and is in excellent
clean condition and looks to have never been used. This is truly
a wonderful piece of textile art. $200 |
