Victorian era gentlemen's soutache smoking cap dates from the 1880s.
It is made of a black silk velvet, with chain stitch golden yellow
soutache work hand embroidered in a vine leaf design. There is a
golden yellow silk fringed tassel on top. The cap is fully lined
in a quilted black silk with cotton batting inside for warmth. These
rare early "smoking caps" were all the rage with style
conscious gentlemen. The cap measures 22 1/2 inches inside circumference.
It is in excellent clean wearable condition and is a rare find.
