This antique Chinese Confucius silk wall hanging dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty also known as the "Dragon Throne". It is made of a red silk background with raised padded satin stitch embroidery work, and gold couching work. There is a large figure of Confucius in the center. Confucius was the founder of the philosophy which came to dominate Chinese life from ad 124 to 1906. There are also embroidered Chinese character symbols, and small round brass encased mirrors sewn onto it. It is backed in a red and white cotton print chintz fabric with trees, flowers, and sparrow birds flying. There is gold metallic lace trim edging along one side. This unique wall hanging banner would have been used to advertise a newly opened shop. The cloth measures 28 inches long, and 16 1/2 inches wide. It is all hand stitched, and is in excellent clean useable condition. There are seven cracked mirrors. This is truly wonderful piece of antique Chinese textile art.
