Ottoman
Turkish Tugra Embroidered Wool Cloth. |

| This
antique Ottoman period Turkish tugra embroidered wool cloth dates
from the 1860s. It is all hand embroidered with tambour chain stitch
crewel needlework done in colorful silk pastel threads on a red,
white, black, and blue pieced wool fabric. There are embroidered
decorative designs of the sultans tugra, Arabic designs, flowers,
and stars. The tugra is of Abdülaziz who was the 32nd sultan
of the Ottoman empire from 1861 to 1876. This “bohça”
and “yorgan yüzü” sampler style textile is
all hand stitched and pieced together. It might have been used as
a tablecloth, wall hanging, bedcover, or for spiritual prayer use
in an opulent Ottoman interior. The squared textile measures 50
by 50 inches. It has wonderful workmanship, but is in as-is condition
with some missing stitching on the decorative designs where the
silk threads have worn away (See close-up photos below). This is
truly a beautiful one of a kind piece of antique Turkish textile
art. $250 |
