Chinese Forbidden Stitch Red Wool Wall Hanging  Front view.

This antique Chinese forbidden stitch red wool wall hanging dates from the late nineteenth century during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a red wool felt background with raised padded satin stitch embroidery work, Peking knot forbidden blind stitch, and gold couching work. The blue and white hand embroidered design work has flowers, butterflies, bats, and a pair of scrolls which is one of the Eight Precious Objects, and a symbol of good fortune. In the center are a pair of pheasants, "the flowery creature" which are one of the twelve symbols of sovereignty and is representative of the natural world and symbolizes literary refinement. This unique narrow long wall hanging panel measures 74 inches long, and 14 inches wide. It is in good condition with only a few tiny moth nip holes. There is some faint black discoloration staining along the bottom. It is not backed or lined. This is a great piece of antique Chinese textile art.
