Block Print Housewife Sewing Needle Case. |

This
antique 19th century block print housewife sewing needle case dates
from the early 1800s. It is made of a leather canvas outer case
with hand painted stencil flowers and vine leaves. There is hand
woven cotton fabric lining with early block printing hand painted
designs done in natural dyes of brown and red. The inside pockets
are lined in the same block print fabric with a indigo blue and
white printed star fabric sewn along the side folds. This rare early
housewife sewing needle case is all hand sewn with heavy cotton
binding trim sewn around the edges and red, brown wool felt scalloped
inserts for holding needles. Housewives were used as sewing kits
throughout the 18th and 19th centuries to hold sewing tools, thread,
thimble, money and jewelry. Usually owned by women, housewives were
sometimes carried by soldiers, sailors and single men to mend their
own clothes. The case measures 9 inches long and 6 inches wide.
The outer leather is well worn, showing it's age. This is a wonderful
and early example of an American block printed textile and collectable
