This antique black silk ribbon bow Bavarian German folk bonnet mourning hat dates from the mid 19th century. It is hand stitched, made of a rigid rag cardboard base, lined inside in a homespun linen, with black silk and a burnout circular pattern voided velvet fabric covering the base and back. There is black silk ribbon trim cascading, draping down the sides and a large bow on the back. This early European Goldhaube, Bodenhaube, haube headdress cap bonnet was the traditional tracht German folk costume worn by the women of the Bavarian region of Munich Germany and was perhaps used during the mourning period due to the all black color. It is a museum deaccession, with inked numbers and "Germany" hand written inside. The beautiful bonnet measures 20 inches in circumference and has 40 inch long ribbons. It is in good condition, with only some minor wear around the velvet fabric trim base. This is a truly a rare and wonderful piece of early German regional textile folk art! |
